GAINESVILLE, FLA. - The Duke women's tennis team finished out it first weekend of fall action on Sunday at the Gator Fall Classic, as three Blue Devils came away with singles wins over South Florida.
Duke first met Miami on Sunday in doubles play, then met South Florida in singles on the final day of the Classic.
Doubles action saw the Blue Devils drop all three matches. Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson faced the seventh-ranked doubles team in the country in Miami's Audra Cohen and Laura Vallerdu and fought hard but came up short, as Cohen and Vallerdu came away with a 9-7 victory. The Duke duos of Melissa Mang and Elizabeth Plotkin and Clelia Deltour and Parker Goyer were also defeated by strong Miami doubles teams.
Singles play vs. South Florida saw Elizabeth Plotkin, Amanda Granson and Robinson all record wins for the Blue Devils. Fifty-fifth-ranked Melissa Mang was defeated by 43rd-ranked Courtney Vernon, 7-5, 6-0, while Kristin Cargrill and Jenny Zika also were defeated.
Next up for the Duke women's tennis team is the Riviera All-American Tournament which runs from Sept. 30 through Oct. 6 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
