CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. ? The 22nd-ranked Duke Women's Soccer Team concluded a two-match road swing on Sunday with a 1-0 loss against eighth-ranked Virginia at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Devils fell to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while the Cavaliers improve to 7-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
“This was a very hard-fought match as both teams played hard for 90 minutes,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We played a good first half, but didn't close out on a couple of opportunities. We didn't play as well in the second half as we did in the first. We are going to have to continue to learn how to win and make big plays in the second half.”
The teams played a scoreless first half of play with the Cavaliers outshooting the Blue Devils, 6-2, before the break. Early in the second half, rain began to fall, the teams played through the precipitation, which was heavy at times.
Virginia was able to break through in the 79th minute as Kelly Quinn and Jen Redmond had a give-and-go passing sequence that led to Redmond finding Jess Rostedt on the wing. Rostedt then cut into the penaly area, before driving a shot into the far side of the net.
For the match, the Cavaliers outshot Duke 11-2 and had a 4-2 corner kick advantage. In net for the Blue Devils, junior Allison Lipsher collected six saves in net. Duke freshman Elisabeth Redmond played against her sister, Jen, in the match and saw action in 70 minutes.
Duke will next host Boston College on Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. and N.C. State on Oct. 1 at 2:00 p.m. with both matches being played at Koskinen Stadium.
