DURHAM, N.C. --- Five members of the Duke men's soccer team were named to All-ACC teams, announced Monday by the conference offices in Greensboro, N.C. Senior midfielder and captain Michael Videira and junior forward Mike Grella were named All-ACC first team selections, senior defender Tim Jepson was a second team choice and midfielder Cole Grossman and defender Christian Ibeagha earned All-ACC Freshmen team honors.
Videira, a native of Milford, Mass., is on the Hermann Trophy watch list for the third consecutive season. He has started 14 matches and played 1,116 minutes. Videira has helped the Blue Devils with two goals and three assists and run the offense from the center midfield position. He earned Academic All-District first team honors earlier this month. This is the fourth consecutive season that Videira has been named to an All-ACC squad.
Grella, who comes to Duke from Glen Cove, N.Y., leads the Blue Devils in goals this season with 10 and points with 26. His 1.53 points per game is third in the ACC and 22nd in the NCAA and his 0.59 goals per game average ranks third in the ACC and 28th in the nation. Grella leads the conference in game-winning goals (six) and shots (77 and 4.53 per game). He was named Top Drawer Soccer's national player of the week on Sept. 1 and has received a total of five national team of the week accolades from three different media sources. This marks the second straight year that Grella has earned All-ACC accolades.
Despite missing the first 10 games due to a high hamstring injury, Jepson has come back to start eight straight games and log 629 minutes in captaining Duke's defense for the second year in a row. He has recorded one assist and two shots. Jepson was named to the Academic All-District second team for the second year in a row on Nov. 1. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native is also one of 10 national finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Grossman has been a major contributor to the Blue Devils in his first season in Durham. He has played in Duke's last 12 games, starting four of them. Grossman, a native of St. Louis, Mo., has tallied three goals (all in ACC contests) on 17 shots and two assists. The highlight of his season came when he scored the game-winning golden goal with 1:33 remaining in the second overtime in his first game as a Blue Devil to lead Duke over Maryland, 2-1, on Sept. 22.
Playing 1,239 minutes this season, Ibeagha has logged the sixth-most minutes of any field player on the team in only his first season. He helped by filling the starting void left by Jepson in the first 10 games and has played a significant role ever since. Ibeagha has seen action in 15 matches with 14 starts. He was named to Top Drawer Soccer's team of the week on Sept. 24.
Duke leads the ACC in all-time All-Freshmen honors with 10 selections, including Grossman and Ibeagha.
The ACC Tournament will run from Nov. 13 through Nov. 18 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., this year. Duke has earned the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 North Carolina on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The complete bracket was officially announced today. If Duke should win on Wednesday, they would play the winner of the No. 2 Wake Forest- No. 7 Clemson match at 8 p.m. on Friday night.
