DURHAM, N.C. --- The Duke men's soccer team was awarded the program's 21st NCAA Tournament bid on Monday evening. The Blue Devils will face-off against Louisville (10-6-4) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky.
This marks the fourth consecutive year and eighth out of the last 10 that Duke has earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. It is also the 20th season out of 29 under head coach John Rennie that the Blue Devils have made the tournament. Prior to Rennie's arrival, Duke had been just once, in 1972. The road contest will be the first tournament starting away from home for Duke since 2000.
The last time that Duke played a true first round game was in 2004. The Blue Devils knocked off Coastal Carolina at home, 3-0, on their way to reaching the NCAA College Cup.
The Cardinals, under head coach and former Blue Devil Ken Lolla, are making their first NCAA Tournament showing in school history. Lolla was a two-time All-America honoree under Rennie at Duke from 1980-1983, and helped guide the team to two ACC Championships and a national championship match appearance.
Duke and Louisville have faced each other only once, in 1997. The Blue Devils won that meeting, 2-0, in the Wolfpack Classic tournament in Raleigh, N.C.
Rennie's record as a collegiate coach stands at 454-205-50 in 35 years. Rennie is in fifth place all-time among NCAA Division I coaches for wins and in third place among active coaches for career wins. With his 410 victories at Duke and 95 in ACC play, Rennie has the most wins of any coach in ACC history. He won Duke's first national championship in any sport in 1986. This will be Rennie's final season as Duke's head coach, a decision made prior to the 2007 season.
Senior defender Tim Jepson was named one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which is presented annually in eight NCAA Division I sports to a senior student-athlete who excels both on and off the field. Fans can vote once a day per computer online until Nov. 21 at http://soccer.seniorclassaward.com/public/men/vote.aspx. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the recipient of the award. The winner will be announced during the NCAA Championships, scheduled December 14-16 in Cary, N.C.
The NCAA tournament's 16 first round matches will be held on Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 at campus sites. If Duke should advance, they would play at fifth-seeded Ohio State in the second round on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m., in Columbus, Ohio. The College Cup (semifinals and final) will be held on Dec. 14 and 16 in Cary, N.C.
