Germanese And Videira Named As Academic All-America Team Members

DURHAM, N.C. --- Senior midfielders Joe Germanese and Michael Videira were honored on Monday in being named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America teams. Germanese earned second team accolades while Videira was placed on the third team. Thirty-three Division I players earned the distinction after being selected from a pool that included all of the Academic All-District first teamers.

After having three Academic All-America selections in the first 70 years of Duke men's soccer (Mike Jeffries in 1983, Jay Heaps in 1998 and Jordan Cila in 2003), the Blue Devils have now doubled that total in the last two years alone. Videira was also named a third team Academic All-America in 2006.

Videira, a native of Milford, Mass., is on the Hermann Trophy watch list for the third consecutive season. He has started 14 matches and played 1,161 minutes despite battling through a leg injury. Videira has helped the Blue Devils with two goals and three assists and run the offense from the center midfield position. The team captain is earning a degree in sociology with a certificate in markets and management.

Germanese is second on the team with seven assists this year and has contributed three goals on 25 shots. The product of St. Louis, Mo., ranks fourth on the squad with 13 points. Germanese has started 18 games, missing only one match due to a minor injury, and logged 1,223 minutes. He is an economics major with a certificate in markets and management.

The Duke men's soccer team was awarded the program's 21st NCAA Tournament bid on Monday. The Blue Devils will face-off against Louisville at 7 p.m. on Friday at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky. This marks the fourth consecutive year and eighth out of the last 10 that Duke has earned a spot in the tournament. If Duke should advance, they would play at fifth-seeded Ohio State in the second round on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m., in Columbus, Ohio.
