GREENSBORO, N.C. - The top-ranked Duke women's basketball team fell to an inspired N.C. State team, 70-65, Saturday in the semifinals of the 2007 ACC Tournament here at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Blue Devils fall to 30-1 and will now await their NCAA Tournament seeding, which will take place a week from Sunday.
Duke was led by Abby Waner and Alison Bales, who each totaled 17 points. Waner hit her first five three-pointers for the second straight game and actually hit two others in the first half - but she was called out of bounds on one and called for traveling before the other. She added a game-high four assists and two rebounds. Bales added seven rebounds and three blocks.
Duke jumped out to quick leads of 7-0 and 14-2 in the game's first four minutes spurred by two Waner three-pointers. The Wolfpack rebounded to pull the game within five at 19-14 behind a pair of triples from Ashley Key. Duke pushed the lead back to double figures after a pair of Lindsey Harding free throws at 31-20 just after the eight minute media timeout.
N.C. State then charged out and outscored Duke 11-3 the rest of the half to bring the deficit to three points at 34-31 at the half. The Wolfpack then came out and took their first lead of the game at 35-34 less than a minute into the second half. The two teams played evenly and Waner's fourth three-pointer gave Duke a 44-40 lead five minutes into the second half.
The Wolfpack fought back again and tied the game at 46 all. With Duke up one at 50-49, the Blue Devils went on an 11-4 run to extend the lead to 61-53 with six minutes left in the game. The turning point of the game may have come with three minutes remaining. Duke held a 63-60 lead and Waner came off a pick and slipped on the court right in front of the Duke bench before she could get a shot off. N.C. State took the ball and hit a fast-break lay-up, making it a one point game at 63-62 Duke.
Two clutch free throws from Bales gave the Blue Devils their final points and final lead with just over two minutes left in the game (65-64). Key hit a jumper with 1:18 remaining to put the Wolfpack up for good and N.C. State hit all four of its free throws down the stretch for the final 70-65 score.
Waner finished the game 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Harding was the only other Blue Devil in double figures with 10 points and she added four assists and four rebounds, as well. Joy Cheek gave Duke an impressive performance off the bnech with eight points and five rebounds in 20 minutes.
Duke's win streak ends at 30 games and the Blue Devils could have two weeks off before they play again in the NCAA Tournament first round.
