DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke duo of senior Tory Zawacki and junior Melissa Mang will compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships presented by Fila in the first national events of the 2007-08 tennis season, as selections have been announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Zawacki and Mang won the doubles championship at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships in August, earning a wild card spot in the All-American main draw, which will take place on Oct. 4-7 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The Blue Devil duo squared off against Taylor Marable and Rebecca Parks of Princeton for the title, recording a commanding 8-2 win to become the first in Duke women's tennis history to win an ITA Summer Championship.
The tandem, which ranks 22nd in the national preseason listings, upset the top-seeded tandem of Keri Robinson and Lauren Lui of Northwestern, 9-8 (4), to earn a spot in the championship match.
A qualifying round for All-American singles and doubles competition will take place on Oct. 2-3, as Mang and freshman Ellah Nze will compete for a spot in the singles main draw. Mang received a preseason singles national ranking of No. 72 last week, while Nze and classmate Reka Zsilinska make up the No. 2-rated freshman class in the country.
Zsilinska and sophomores Elizabeth Plotkin and Amanda Granson will compete in the singles prequalifying round for the championships, held on Sept. 29-30 at UCLA, while Zawacki is currently listed as an alternate. Competing for Duke in the doubles prequalifying round will be the tandems of Plotkin and Nze, and Granson and junior Jessi Robinson. Plotkin is listed at No. 102 in the preseason singles rankings and combines with Nze to form the 35th-ranked duo in the rankings.
