DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's tennis team is set for the first national event of the 2007-08 tennis season, as the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila begins on Saturday, Sept. 29 with prequalifying singles and doubles competition held at UCLA.
Five Blue Devils will be in action in the prequalifying singles bracket on Saturday beginning at 10:15 a.m PT (1:15 p.m. ET), as freshman Amanda Granson is set to take on Samantha Mouly of San Diego, and classmate Elizabeth Plotkin, who ranks 102nd in the nation, faces Kirsten Paul of Western Michigan. Second round matches are set for 1:45 p.m. PT (4:45 p.m. ET).
At 12 p.m. PT (3 p.m. ET), senior Tory Zawacki will take on No. 113 Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State and freshman Reka Zsilinszka will face No. 125 Romy Farrah of Miami, while junior Jessi Robinson squares off against Clare Fermin of UC Irvine. Second round matches are set for 3:30 p.m PT (6:30 p.m. ET).
Competing for Duke in the doubles prequalifying round will be the tandem of Granson and Robinson, as the duo takes on Romy Farah and Caren Seenauth of Miami at 8:30 a.m. PT (11:30 a.m. ET) on Saturday. Second round action will take place on Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PT (12:30 p.m. ET).
A qualifying round for All-American singles and doubles competition will take place on Oct. 2-3 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., as junior Melissa Mang and freshman Ellah Nze will compete for a spot in the singles main draw, and the Blue Devil tandem of Plotkin and Nze will challenge for a place in the doubles bracket. Mang received a preseason singles national ranking of No. 72, while Plotkin and Nze combine to form the No. 35 team in the nation.
The duo of Zawacki and Mang won the doubles championship at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships in August, earning a wild card spot in the All-American main draw, which will take place on Oct. 4-7, also in Pacific Palisades. The Blue Devil pair ranks 22nd in the national preseason listings.
