CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Powered by a career-high five three-pointers from senior Wanisha Smith, who along with Chante Black scored 16 points, the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils defeated the Miami Hurricanes, 84-72, on Saturday to open ACC play.
With the win, Duke has won seven straight and is 12-3 on the season and 1-0 in the ACC while the 'Canes fall to 7-9 overall and 0-1 in the league. Duke improved to 5-0 in the series with Miami and won its 10th straight ACC opener.
Smith hit 5-of-6 from distance, including 3-of-3 in the first half, to pace the Blue Devils. Black added 10 rebounds and four blocks with her 16 points for her fourth double-double of the season.
Duke jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in less than two minutes, but Miami came back on hot first half shooting from senior Maurita Reid, who scored 14 points in the first stanza. The Hurricanes held a 30-28 lead at the 6:55 mark before Duke went on an 18-4 run to close the first half. Smith hit two treys during the run, while Black added six points in the Blue Devil rally.

Four three-pointers by Miami over the first six minutes of the second stanza kept the score within striking distance for the Hurricanes, but a three-pointer by Duke's Smith at the 12:32 mark gave the Blue Devils a 58-48 lead. Duke would never lead by less than 10 points the rest of the way.
Duke was aided by its inside play as the Blue Devils outrebounded Miami 47-28, marking the fourth straight game Duke has outrebounded its opponent.
Smith, a product of Upper Marlboro, Md., continues to play well since her return from a hand injury, which forced her to miss five games. With her three assists on the night, Smith moved into fourth place on Duke's all-time assist chart with 446. Over the last two games, the 5-11 guard has averaged 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals, while hitting 52.4 percent of her field goals and 66.7 percent from downtown.
