DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Duke junior forward Chante Black knows she could have scored more than her 19 points in No. 12 Duke's 70-38 win over Florida State, but she didn't really see the need.
Black, who also had nine rebounds and four blocks, led the Blue Devils to coach Joanne P. McCallie's first Atlantic Coast Conference win at home.
"I'm always working to demand the ball, but there's always time when I'm not really demanding it," Black said. "I think there were times in the second half when I could have demanded it more, but you know, as a team we played extremely well. There's times where I shouldn't have to be demanding the ball."
Black scored 10 of Duke's first 12 points, causing fans to cry "Chante's winning" at the Seminoles, who suffered through one of their worst shooting nights under coach Sue Semrau.
Florida State shot 23.4 percent for the game and recorded its fewest points since scoring 36 at N.C. State on Jan. 26, 1997.
The easy win was a tuneup for the Blue Devils (13-3, 2-0), who travel to No. 4 Maryland on Monday for what will be their first big test in the ACC this season.
After Duke took a 12-10 lead, Florida State went nearly six minutes without a bucket, allowing the Blue Devils to take control of the game.
Duke's man-to-man defense hassled short-handed Florida State, which grew increasingly flustered as the game continued and went long stretches without a basket.
"Defense and rebounding really controls tempo," McCallie said. "I think the first group set the tone. I thought the first 10 minutes were excruciatingly intense from our standpoint, causing a lot of missed shots. I think anything you can really defend and get other teams out of sync, that's a very positive thing, and the great thing about it tonight is that it was continued.
"The tone was set and then regardless of whom we put in, they followed suit."
Duke outrebounded Florida State 57-45. The Blue Devils also had 19 steals, leading to 24 turnovers.
The Seminoles played without leading scorer Tanae Davis-Cain, who averages 13.7 points per game, and top post player Britany Miller.
Davis-Cain is suspended "for violation of team standards" and Miller is academically ineligible.
"I haven't been that embarrassed in a long time coaching a team that was wearing a Florida State uniform," Seminoles coach Sue Semrau said. "I don't care that we only had one senior and one junior on the floor. I don't care that we are playing without a couple of our starters. I think that the fact that our shots weren't dropping ? we allowed that to get to us in a big, big way."
Antionette Howard was the Seminoles' leading scorer with eight points while Mara Freshour had 10 rebounds. Florida State's trouble scoring continued into the second half. The Seminoles needed 4 minutes, 57 seconds before Freshour scored their first bucket of the half.
The only shooting positive for the Seminoles was that they were slightly better behind the 3-point line than the Blue Devils, who needed Emily Waner's 3 with 33 seconds left to continue their 97-game streak with at least one 3-pointer. The teams were a combined 4-of-28 from the 3-point line.
