PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.?Duke University junior Tara Iyer advanced to the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championship today with a victory in her final match in the qualifying draw. Iyer posted three victories over the past two days to earn a spot in the main draw, which will be held on Oct. 2-5 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Ranked 60th in the ITA's preseason poll, Iyer used a dominant third set to defeat 49th-ranked Michaela Kissell of the University of Miami, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1. Iyer is one of eight players in the original field of 64 in the qualifying round to earn a place in the 32-player main draw.
In the first day of the qualifying round, Iyer breezed past opponents from Harvard and Baylor to set up this afternoon's match with Kissell.
Iyer joins Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka in the main draw for the weekend. The tournament features 23 at-large selections and eight players from the qualifying round. Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson will join forces in the doubles draw.
