Duke In the NCAA Tournament
In earning an at-large berth into the NCAA College Cup, the Blue Devils have reached the big show for the sixth straight season and 15 overall times. Duke will be hosting NCAA College Cup games for the first time since 2000 when the Blue Devils defeated Furman 3-1. Historically, Duke holds a 3-0 record in the NCAA College Cup in matches played in Durham. Just a season ago, the Blue Devils dispatched South Carolina, Georgia, and Indiana en route to a place in the Elite Eight before falling to perennial powerhouse Notre Dame. Duke has won at least one contest in the tournament each of the last seven appearances. The only time Duke has reached the NCAA Championship game was back in 1992.
A Look at the Opponent
Radford enters play with a 14-1-6 overall record and a mark of 4-1-4 in the Big South Conference. The Highlanders are coming off a conference-winning performance, defeating top-ranked Coastal Carolina 2-1 in the Big South Conference championship contest. Radford's Laura Culver notched the match's first goal, scoring on a penalty in just the seventh minute. Latrice Lee contributed what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 31st minute, manufactured by a Melony Davis assist. Over the course of the season, the Highlanders have totaled 44 goals, outshooting opponents by a margin of 337-283. As just a freshman, Ashley Jordan has made her mark on the program, contributing a team-leading 12 goals. Radford also boasts a stubborn defense which has allowed just 17 goals all season while posting a total of seven shutouts. Led by 13-year head coach Ben Sohrabi, Radford will make its fourth trip to the NCAA tournament and its first since 2002.
The Series
These teams have met just twice in the history of their programs with the Blue Devils winning on both occasions (3-1 and 4-0). However, unfamiliarity may be a factor in the match as their last meeting came 16 years ago in 1992.
Back At Home
So far this season, Duke has registered an 8-1-1 overall record in matches played at home. The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 31-4 in those contests. Duke has played only one home match out of the last seven contests.
Last Game
Duke is coming off an early exit from the ACC Tournament by way of a 1-0 loss to Boston College in the quarterfinals. Duke was unable to capitalize on any of its 10 shots over the course of the match and was held scoreless for the third time in as many matches. Duke's leading goal scorer, KayAnne Gummersall, played 83 minutes in the match but did not register a shot.
In The Rankings
In the rankings, Duke is 15th in the Soccer Buzz, 22nd in the Soccer America and 17th in the SoccerTimes.com and 18th in the NSCAA/adidas polls. Radford, William & Mary and South Carolina are currently unranked by the same polls.
In The ACC Stats
Despite a recent scoring slump, Duke continues to rank in the top third of most categories within the ACC -- points (4th, 133), goals (4th, 45), assists (4th, 43), and shutouts (t2nd, 11). As for individual stats, Elisabeth Redmond ranks tied for sixth in shots (60), tied for sixth in points (24), tied for sixth in points per game (1.26), tied for sixth in goals (10), and shares second in the category of game-winning goals (5). Last year, Duke registered 34 goals in 23 games and in 2006 the Blue Devils scored 29 goals in 21 matches. The Blue Devils tied a school-record to open the season with nine goals in a win over Coastal Carolina and their 45 goals on the season are tied for seventh-most in single season Duke history. Duke's scoring offense of 2.25 goals per game currently ranks 22nd nationally and the Blue Devils have posted a 292-209 shot advantage on the season. Duke has notched nine matches with three or more goals in 2008, as compared to four all of last year. In the match against Dayton, Duke registered three goals in a span of three minutes and 52 seconds, which was the fifth-quickest interval for three goals in Duke women's soccer history.
As of late, the Blue Devils have been struggling to both produce and finish scoring opportunities. Duke has been shutout in four of its last five games (Duke scored six goals against Clemson) after just two scoreless outings over the entire rest of the season. Elisabeth Redmond has been without a goal or even an assist in six matches since netting two goals against Wake Forest. In the two most recent games against Virginia Tech and Boston College, the Blue Devils have registered just seven and 10 shots, respectively.
Stellar Defense
Although the Blue Devils have been without a win in three outings, it is at no fault to the defense. Duke has delivered shutouts in four of its last seven games and in three out of the last five. Over the course of the five most recent matches (all conference games), the Blue Devils have allowed just two scores.
