DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University junior KayAnne Gummersall tallied a goal in the seventh minute and the 15th-ranked and third-seeded Blue Devils held off William & Mary to score a 1-0 victory in the second round of the NCAA Women's College Cup. The Blue Devils advance to the round of 16 against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rival Virginia next weekend.
Duke pushes its record to 14-5-3 overall as it moves into the third round for the second consecutive season. Virginia awaits the Blue Devils after getting past West Virginia, 3-2, in its second round contest. Duke and the Cavaliers battled to a 0-0 tie during the regular season. The game date and time is yet to be determined.
The Blue Devils came out fast and hard in the opening 45 minutes. Looking for that early goal again, they got into the attack quickly and created an outstanding opportunity just over three minutes into the game. Senior Kelly Hathorn took the ball on the left flank and served it to sophomore Marybeth Kreger in the penalty area. Kreger, who is from Noblesville, Ind., got two shots off as William & Mary denied the first attempt and Kreger's rebound skipped wide of the net.
The high pressure by Duke continued as the Blue Devils did not allow William & Mary to get into the flow of the game. Duke got on the board at 7:23 when Kreger collected the ball on the right side and sent it to the feet of Gummersall in the penalty area. With her defender on her back, Gummersall was able to spin on her defender and fire the shot into the right corner of the goal. It was Gummersall's 13th goal of the season and second in the tournament.
Gummersall, a native of Wilmette, Ill, now ranks sixth on Duke's single-season goals chart with 13 tallies on the year. She is tied with Samantha Baggett, who also posted 13 goals in 1997. Kreger's assist on the play gave her a team-best sixth on the year.
Looking for that second goal, the Blue Devils maintained their high pressure and were able to generate good opportunities throughout the remaining minutes of the half. However, William & Mary was able to stop that final pass to keep Duke from building on its lead. Duke headed into the locker room with a 1-0 lead despite outshooting the Tribe, 13-3.
William & Mary came out in the second half and picked up its level of intensity all over the field. Pressuring the Blue Devils in all areas, the Tribe was able to generate good attacking opportunities in the second stanza.
Duke, however, continued its outstanding defensive effort to keep the Tribe from getting the necessary equalizer. William & Mary's best scoring opportunity came midway through the half when a striker got loose behind the defense. Duke goalkeeper Cassidy Powers came off her line to cut down the angle and made the crucial save to keep the Blue Devils with a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils regained some momentum late in the second half, but were not able to break through for a goal to seal the victory. Defensively, Duke stayed strong throughout the second 45 minutes and held off the Tribe's push in the final minutes to post its 12th shutout of the season. The 12 shutouts on the season matches a Duke single-season record, which was last accomplished in 2004.
Duke held an 18-4 advantage on shots, including 5-1 in the second half, while William & Mary had four corner kicks to Duke's three.
Blue Devil senior Lorraine Quinn registered a team-high four shots on the afternoon, while junior Elisabeth Redmond, Gummersall and Kreger.
In goal, Powers made three saves to post her eighth shutout of the season, which is tied for sixth on the single season list. A product of San Ramon, Calif., Powers is one shutout shy of tying the mark of nine held by Melissa Carr and Allison Lipsher. Walker made six stops in 90 minutes for William & Mary.
