DURHAM, N.C.?A pair of former Duke University men's lacrosse players recently were selected in the 2009 Major League Lacrosse supplemental draft. Midfielder and Kyle Dowd and goaltender Dan Loftus were picked in the third and fifth rounds, respectively.
A 2006 graduate, Dowd was selected by the Rochester Rattler as the 30th pick of the draft. Loftus went to the Long Island Lizards in the fifth round as the 44th selection.
Dowd played for the Blue Devils for two seasons after transferring from Johns Hopkins. The native of East Northport, N.Y., started all 20 games on the top midfield line and tallied 31 points on 20 goals and 11 assists in 2005. As a senior he registered 14 goals and six assists for 20 points in eight games in the midfield.
A two-time third team All-America selection, Loftus manned the Blue Devils' goal for three seasons. He posted a 7.02 goals against average and a .625 save percentage as a senior and finished the year ranked fifth in the nation in save percentage and sixth in goals against average. Loftus helped guide the Blue Devils to two national semifinals and to the national championship game in 2007. For his career, Loftus played in 64 contests, including 50 starts, posted a .617 save percentage and a 7.35 goals against average in nearly 2,790 minutes of action.
The 2009 MLL season is set to begin on Saturday, May 16th. Rochester captured the 2008 MLL title, while the Lizards took fifth in the Eastern Conference.
