DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling team wrapped up the regular season in strong fashion, winning eight of 10 matches and picking up four pins against the Duquesne Dukes on Sunday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils won 42-7 on senior night, in which Dan Fox, Bryan Gibson and Kellan McKeon were honored for their careers as Blue Devils. The meet can be seen on-demand on ACCSelect.com.
Sunday afternoon marked the final regular season contest for Duke. The Blue Devils finish at 12-9 this year and 12-4 outside of the ACC. Duke did not lose a non-conference meet after Nov. 24.
McKeon started things out for Duke at 125 pounds, winning a 7-4 decision. The captain from Chapel Hill, N.C., is now 26-13 this season with a 13-7 mark in duals. His 61 career victories are tied for 23rd in the Duke records.
After Duquesne went ahead for its only lead at 4-3, Gibson put the Blue Devils on top for good with his 75th career victory. His pin of Jayk Cobbs at 4:03 was his fifth fall of the year. The victory put Gibson in sole possession of 14th place for career wins at Duke. Gibson is 12-6 this year and 8-4 in duals.
Redshirt sophomore Michael Degli Obizzi earned his second fall of the week at 149 pounds when he pinned Brad Shrum in just 1:18. It was Degli Obizzi's sixth fall of the year, which ties him for second on the team. He has posted a 21-8 record this season and is 43-30 in his career in Durham.
At 165 pounds, junior captain Addison Nuding scored a 20-2 technical fall to put Duke up 20-7 in the meet. Nuding's season record stands at 28-8, and he is now tied for 12th on Duke's single-season wins list. He is 15-4 in dual meets this year and 50-35 all-time at Duke.
An injury defeat belonged to redshirt sophomore Ben Wales at 174 pounds. He went for 5:52 of his match before the opponent forfeited the remainder due injury. Wales is 20-14 this year, 10-6 in duals and has three falls. His career record is now 29-25.
Redshirt sophomore John Barone picked up a major decision on Sunday night to conclude his monstrous regular season. He is 34-6 with 13 falls and an 18-3 ledger in duals. Barone's 69-22 overall mark as a Blue Devil is good for ninth place on Duke's all-time winning percentage list with a .758 clip. He is already tied for first on Duke's single season wins list and is 19th on the career wins list. He needs one more victory to eclipse the single season wins record at Duke, and will try to do so at the ACC Tournament. Literally every Duke record is under assault this year by the native of Shirley, N.Y.
At 197 pounds, redshirt junior captain Dan Tulley picked up the Blue Devils' third fall of the afternoon and his first of the season in 3:57 over the Dukes' Dave Mitchell. It was Tulley's fourth win of the year.
