TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The sixth-ranked Duke women's tennis team knocked off No. 21 Florida State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla., as the Blue Devils improve to 12-3 (5-2 ACC) and the Seminoles fall to 12-4 (3-2 ACC).
Duke won the doubles point in dramatic fashion as the 53rd-ranked Seminole tandem of Ania Rynarzewska and Katie Rybakova defeated the third-ranked Blue Devil pair of sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang, 8-6, at the top position before Duke was victorious at No. 3 on an 8-3 win by the freshman duo of Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze.
It would come down to the No. 2 spot, as senior Tory Zawacki and junior Jessi Robinson posted a 9-7 triumph over Carolin Walter and Federica Suess to clinch the point and go ahead 1-0.
Singles competition saw Florida State tie the score at 1-1 on a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Granson, courtesy of Suess, but Duke battled back to go up 2-1 as Robinson defeated Rynarzewska, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 6 spot.
The Blue Devils increased their lead to 3-1 when Mang got past Wente, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 4, and the Seminoles got a win from 33rd-ranked Rybakova at No. 2, as she defeated 14th-ranked Nze, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 to put Florida State within one at 3-2.
No. 17 Zsilinszka then clinched the victory for Duke with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over 100th-ranked Walter at the No. 3 position, before sophomore Tara Iyer dropped a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5) decision to 68th-ranked Lauren Macfarland at the top singles position to account for the final 4-3 score.
