ATHENS, Ga.?The Duke University women's tennis team opened the fall season today at the Georgia Invitational. Three different doubles teams played in a pair of matches against Indiana and Mississippi in the first day of competition.
The Blue Devils kicked off the day with a 2-1 victory over Indiana in three doubles matches. Third-ranked Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson put together an 8-4 victory over Katya Zapadalova, while the No. 37 duo of Ella Nze and Reka Zsilinszka blanked IU's Stephanie Heller and Charlotte Martin, 8-0. The pair of Jessi Robinson and Tara Iyer dropped an 8-2 decision Lindsey Stuckey and Myriam Sopel.
In the afternoon matches, the Blue Devils dropped both matches to Mississippi before rebounding with a victory over a fourth pair from Indiana. Mang and Granson narrowly fell 8-6 and Nze and Zsilinszka were edged by Karen Nijssen and Kristi Boxx, 9-7. Robinson and Iyer fought their way to an 8-6 win over Indiana's fourth duo of Alba Berdala and Maria Guerriero.
The Blue Devils continue tournament play the next two days. Saturday's action will feature two sessions of round robin singles as well as doubles round robin action again.
