PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -Duke University senior Amanda Granson defeated a pair of nationally-ranked opponents to advance to the round of 16 in the qualifying section of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. Granson represented the Blue Devil tennis team in singles action, while Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka competed in doubles play.
Nze and Zsilinszka opened the day with doubles play. Taking on the seventh-seeded duo of Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable from Princeton University, the Duke tandem fought hard in an 8-6 setback. The loss puts them at 3-2 for the season.
In singles action, Granson took on ACC foe and 54th-ranked Emily Fraser of Virginia in the opening round of 64. Ranked 57th overall, Granson cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory to set up a match with Alexandra Poorta of St. Mary's College in the round of 32. Against the 55th-ranked Poorta, Granson was even more impressive as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory to earn a place in the round of 16. She will take on sixth-seeded and 29th-ranked Natasha Marks of Arizona to earn a spot in the main draw of the championship event.
Nze and Zsilinszka also will be back in action tomorrow in the doubles consolation bracket.
The main draw featuring Nze and Zsilinszka in singles kicks off on Oct. 8.
