ORLANDO, Fla.?The Duke University women's tennis team kicked off the outdoor season with a commanding 7-0 victory at Central Florida this afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex. The fourth-ranked Blue Devils are now 10-1 overall in dual matches.
“We knew we had to get outside because we haven't played outdoors since October,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “I knew we would struggle a little bit in the beginning, especially in doubles. This was a good match for us to play to get the outdoor season started and we need to take advantage of the next five days we are down here.”
Duke captured the doubles point with the tandems of Mallory Cecil and Jessi Robinson and Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka winning. Cecil and Robinson posted an 8-4 victory at No. 2, while Nze and Zsilinszka cruised to their 10th dual match win by an 8-1 score in the No. 3 spot. Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson's comeback attempt fell short in an 8-3 setback.
In singles action, it was all Duke as the squad cruised to its 10th win of the season dropping just 20 games across six matches. Ranked 28th nationally, Cecil breezed past Jenny Frisell by a 6-0, 6-4 score for her 10th victory of her collegiate career and eighth as Duke's top player.
Zsilinszka and Nze traded places in the lineup with Zsilinszka playing in the No. 2 singles spot and Nze at third. Playing in the second spot for the first time this season, Zsilinszka continued her stretch of not losing a set with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win. The victory was her team-high 11th of the season. Nze needed little time to finish as well, beating her Golden Knight opponent 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 10-0.
Granson and Mang both rebounded after doubles and started to hit their stride at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. The 66th-ranked Granson lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Alexis Rodriguez, while Mang dropped Christy Core 6-3, 6-1 for her 10th win of the young season.
Closing out the match for the Blue Devils was Robinson in the No. 6 slot with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over previously unbeaten Katie Orletsky. Robinson is now 6-5 overall in dual matches.
Duke will spend the week in Florida for spring break and will take on No. 3 Notre Dame on March 12 at 12 p.m.
