SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Duke women's tennis player
Hanna Mar won her first collegiate tennis singles championship at the San Diego State Fall Classic on Sunday.
Mar was victorious in her first championship match in college tennis. She won her title match with a come from behind win by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, over San Diego's Juliette Coupez.
“I am very excited to win because this is one of my first college tournaments,” Mar said. “It was very exciting to get off to a good start and I'm glad to be playing well.”

Monica Gorny faced off against San Diego State's Olivia Colman on Sunday. Gorny picked up win the win by a score of, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0, and finished the tournament in third place.
The Duke duo of Gorny and Mar played in the third place match in doubles on Sunday against Cal State Northridge's Brooke Doane and Maria Pistalu. Gorny and Mar grabbed the win and a third place finish in doubles by a score of 8-1.
“We had a really good weekend but it gives us some things to work on, and there times where they both played well and struggled,” women's head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. “We played the tournament to get some work in and we did that. I was happy that Hanna won the championship. Hanna was down and came back to win and that shows her determination as a player.”
The Duke women begin play at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Monday, Oct. 4, in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The Blue Devils have four players scheduled to compete in singles and two teams of doubles for the seven day tournament hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club.

Mary Clayton and
Ellah Nze were selected to the main draw of the singles tournament that was announced on Sept 13. Clayton won the ITA Summer Championship that gave her an automatic berth in the main draw of the tournament.
Nadine Fahoum and
Reka Zsilinszka also earned spots in the qualifying singles section. Fahoum has been selected as the number four seed overall in the qualifying round and will match up with Brynn Boren from Tennessee on Tuesday, Oct 5. Duke teammate Zsilinszka has been chosen as the number five seed overall and will face off against Southern California's Valiera Pulido.
In doubles action, the duo of Clayton and
Monica Gorny were selected to the main doubles draw, with the pair of Fahoum and Nze selected to the qualifying doubles. Fahoum and Nze have been selected as the number one overall seed in qualifying doubles.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships qualifying rounds will begin on Monday at noon (EST).
