Klopp Continues Strong Season at Keystone Classic

PHILADELPHIA-Duke University redshirt freshman Bret Klopp continued his strong start to the 2010-11 wrestling season by taking third overall at the Keystone Classic today in Philadelphia. Klopp posted three falls to earn his third top-three finish of the season and highlight Duke's three top-five finishes on the day.
Also garnering top-five finishes for the Blue Devils were redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo taking fourth and Christopher Piccolella earning fifth place. Duke finished ninth overall in the team competition with 45.5 points.
Competing at 174 pounds, Klopp pushed his season record to 15-1 overall with a 4-1 record on the day. Klopp earned the third seed in the bracket and started the day with the first of his three falls for the day. He picked up a decision in the second round before falling to the No. 1 seed in the semifinal round to move down to the consolation bracket. The native of Lander, Wyo., got back on track in his next two matches, needing just 2:20 to win both bouts. He pinned the No. 5 seed in the consolation semifinal in 29 seconds and cruised to third place with a fall in 1:51 in his final contest of the day.
Bencomo took fourth at 184 pounds as the No. 5 seed. He posted a major decision in his opening match before edging the No. 4 seed in the second round with a narrow 3-2 decision to earn a spot in the semifinal round. After falling to the top seed, Bencomo outlasted sixth-seeded Brock Mantella of Boston University to reach the consolation championship. In his final match of the day, Bencomo dropped a tough 6-4 decision to third-seeded Aaron Jones of Northwestern.
Rounding out Duke's top finishers was Piccolella at 149 pounds. The sophomore battled his way through a four overtime 8-6 decision in the opening round before falling to the No. 2 seed in the second round. Piccolella came right back in the consolation bracket and fought his way past two opponents with close decisions and earned a spot in the fifth-place match.
Competing at 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Riley Adamson and senior Mike Bell both posted 2-2 records for the day. Bell registered a pair of wins in the championship bracket before falling with a tough decision in the consolation bracket.
The Blue Devils will take one weekend off from competition before coming back to compete at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 3-4.
