Zsilinszka Advances to Consolation Quarterfinals

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Reka Zsilinszka opened the first round of the consolation singles draw at the ITA National Indoor Championships on Friday. Zsilinszka picked up the straight sets win by a score of 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Blue Devil senior began day two with a strong start by winning her first consolation singles match after falling in her main draw opener on Thursday. Zsilinszka defeated Kristen Strimple from Point Loma Nazarene by a score of 6-1, 6-4. After Zsilinszka won the opening set, Strimple fought back and kept the match close throughout the second. In the end Zsilinszka was able to fight off the charge and pick up the straight sets win to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.
Zsilinszka will play her quarterfinal match on Saturday against Danielle Lau from Southern California at 10 a.m., with the consolation singles semifinals to follow.
The Duke women's tennis team opened day one of the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Durham at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Friday with first round doubles and singles.
Duke opened the day with doubles facing off against three doubles teams from Vanderbilt. The Duke pair of Elizabeth Plotkin and Mary Clayton won their doubles match by a score of 9-8(2) over Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg. The Blue Devil duo of Ellah Nze and Rachal Kahan fell in their doubles match to Rachael Dillon and Alex Leatu 8-5, and Monica Gorny and Hanna Mar lost their opening doubles match 9-8 to Lauren Mira and Erica Robertson. Duke will play two doubles matches against Georgia Tech and Princeton beginning at 9 a.m.
In singles action, the Blue Devils went 11-1 on the day over Pepperdine and Vanderbilt. Mary Clayton, Monica Gorny, Ellah Nze, Nadine Fahoum and Elizabeth Plotkin all went undefeated on the day with freshman Hanna Mar going 1-1. The Blue Devils will play Minnesota in singles tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
