Wrestling Posts Strong Showing at Citadel Open

CHARLESTON, S.C.-The Duke University wrestling team kicked off the 2010-11 season with a solid showing at the annual Citadel Open. Featuring a selection of freshmen and sophomores, the Blue Devils came away with three third-place finishes and one fourth-place finish. Each of Duke's wrestlers was competing for the first time as a Blue Devil.
Freshmen Ryan Harding and Brian Self and redshirt freshman Bret Klopp captured third-place honors, while redshirt freshman David Henry took fourth. Duke competed in four weight divisions overall in the first tournament of the season.
Competing at 157 pounds, Harding advanced to the championship semifinal with three consecutive decisions before falling to Darton's Kafuba Donzon in overtime. The rookie wrestler came right back in the wrestleback brackets and registered consecutive wins to take third overall. Harding pinned Brent Mowry of Davidson in just 1:03 in the consolation semifinal and emerged victorious in the final after a medical forfeit.
Also competing at 157 pounds was freshman Ethan Ruby. Wrestling for the first time in his collegiate career, Ruby went 3-2 overall as he posted three consecutive wins in the wrestleback bracket, including a major decision over Hunter Allen of Mercer.
Duke took home third-place medals at 174 and 197 pounds with Klopp and Self going 7-1 and 6-1, respectively. Klopp opened the tournament with a win before dropping a tough decision to Bryce Sopko of Limestone. Klopp came right back and won six straight matches, posting falls in four of those wins to take third place overall. He also finished third overall in 2009.
At 197 pounds, Self suffered a narrow 3-2 loss in his opening bout to Richard Rippy of Central Florida. Dropping to the wrestleback bracket, Self rebounded in a big way with six straight victories to earn third place. He registered a pair of falls during his run, including one in just 24 seconds against Garth Harbert from VMI, and ultimately avenged his loss to Rippy with a 5-3 decision in the consolation final.
Overall in the tournament, Duke posted a 25-7 record across four weight classes.
