The Tribe (5-9) grabbed the first point of the match, winning No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by the respective scores of 8-3, 8-2. The Duke duo of Ellah Nze and Amanda Granson won at No. 1, defeating Ragini Archaya and Katie Kargl 8-2.
"We didn't play great in doubles, but we were never down in singles," head coach Jamie Ashworth. "It was our first match in 10 days so it's good for us to get back in the swing of things. We play better when we are in match mode."
In singles action, it was 56th-ranked Elizabeth Plotkin getting off the court first with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marlen Mesgarzadeh at the No. 2 spot. With the score even at one, junior Reka Zsilinszka gave the Blue Devils the lead for good as she raced past Carmen Pop 6-3, 6-0.
The win is her 100th of her career, the 18th Blue Devil to reach the milestone. Her career record currently stands at 100-25 for a .800 winning percentage, which ranks second all-time among the players who have reached the 100-win mark.
Freshman Mary Clayton emerged with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 6 spot to push Duke (12-2) one step closer to winning the match. However, the Blue Devils had to wait just a little longer as Nze closed out her third set to clinch the final point. Duke's top singles player captured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Archaya and made it a 4-1 contest.
Granson and sophomore Monica Gorny also closed out their matches on courts four and five, respectively. Granson won 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and Gorny outlasted her Tribe foe 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Duke returns home for its next three matches. The Blue Devils start the brief homestand against No. 2 Northwestern. It will be the final non-conference match of the season for Duke.
"They won the national indoors and I'm sure they know we knocked them off a year ago and they are coming in with a lot to play for," Ashworth said. "And we are too. It's our last non-conference match and we want to end that part of the season on a high note."
