WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Ryan Semeniuk and Mike Murray combined for eight RBI to lead Wake Forest to an 18-3 series-tying win over Duke on Saturday evening at Gene Hooks Field.
Semeniuk and Murray both drove in four runs with Semeniuk launching one of Wake Forest's three home runs. Semeniuk also doubled and went 3-for-4 while Murray finished 2-for-4.
The Demon Deacons (11-31, 3-17 ACC) staked their starter Austin Stadler to an early 7-0 lead that he never relinquished. Stadler (2-3) surrendered just two runs over 6.2 innings while scattering nine hits and one walk. Stadler's only earned run came on a solo home run from Duke outfielder Will Piwnica-Worms in the top of the fourth inning.
Wake Forest leadoff hitter Pat Blair went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four runs while reaching base four times. He was one of three Demon Deacon hitters with at least two extra-base hits, joining Semeniuk and first baseman Matt Conway, who doubled twice.
Designated hitter Carlos Lopez and pinch hitter Mike Lubanski also homered for Wake Forest. The Deacs scored in all but one inning on the way to a season-high 18 runs.
Duke junior shortstop Jake Lemmerman logged three singles and an RBI, but was left stranded on base after each base hit. Piwnica-Worms and freshman Eric Brady also logged two hits apiece, though Piwnica-Worms was the only one to score. Wake Forest turned three double plays in the game, killing Duke rallies with each one.
Chase Bebout (4-2) took the loss for Duke after surrendering seven runs on five hits in two innings of work. Bebout had previously led Duke to a 6-1 record when he started on the mound, but failed to make it through the fifth inning for the first time in his seven starts this season.
With the series tied at one game apiece, Duke and Wake Forest will play for the series win on Sunday, April 25, at 1 p.m. Duke will start right-hander Dennis O'Grady (0-2, 4.68 ERA) opposite Wake Forest right-hander Michael Dimock (1-7, 6.88 ERA)
