DURHAM, N.C. - A pair of four-RBI nights from
RJ Hamilton and
Michael DiMartini fueled Duke's offense to a 14-9 victory versus William & Mary on Tuesday, May 12. The Blue Devils (24-28) posted a six spot in the third inning to seize control and eventually defeat the Tribe (21-19). Hamilton logged all four of his RBI with one swing, courtesy of a grand slam in the third inning, while DiMartini hammered a three-run shot in the sixth and added an RBI single in the seventh.
Collin Anderson and
Tyler Albright also left the yard, as Albright tallied homers in back-to-back games and Anderson increased his freshman long ball total to five during a 3-for-4 night at the plate. On the basepaths,
Matthew Strand swiped four bags, a new single-game high in his five-year career.
On the mound, the Blue Devils' starter,
Drew Bryan, worked 4.0 innings of one-run ball, yielding just two hits across 16 batters faced.
Roman DiGiacomo earned the win in relief, with just one earned run allowed.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke starter Drew Bryan opened the game with a clean top of the first, retiring the Tribe's first three batters in order. Kaden Smith posted the first hit of the contest with a ground-rule double and was brought home by Matthew Strand, who laced a single to right field three pitches later.
- The visitors scored their first run in the top of the third with an RBI single.
- The Blue Devils responded with six runs in the home half of the third, with all six runs coming with two outs. Coltin Quagliano drove in two with a bases-loaded single. After Jake Lambdin reached on a single to shortstop to reload the bases, RJ Hamilton cleared the left-field fence with a 391-foot grand slam.
- Collin Anderson continued the homers with a long ball in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Tribe scratched across three unearned runs in the top of the fifth, pulling within four runs, 8-4, before Tyler Albright led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left center.
- William & Mary scratched across a run in the next half inning. The first two Blue Devils reached base in the bottom of the sixth and Michael DiMartini took the first pitch he saw 354 feet to left field for a three-run homer.
- Both teams tallied RBI singles in the seventh frame, and the Tribe hit their lone homer of the night in the eighth. Smith answered for the Blue Devils, roping a single through the left side for his second hit of the night and scoring Hamilton from second base.
- The Tribe scored twice in the top of the ninth before Duke finished off the 14-9 victory.
