CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Duke senior
Aidan Weaver struck out nine Virginia batters across 5.1 innings, but the 16th-seeded Blue Devils were unable to knock off the No. 8-seed Cavaliers on Wednesday, May 20.
Duke took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first and led, 2-1, entering the bottom of the sixth, but Virginia scored five of the game's final seven runs to secure the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke promptly got on the board to start the morning, taking advantage of a double from the second batter of the game, RJ Hamilton. The junior swiped third base and then raced home on an RBI groundout by Kaden Smith.
- Virginia also scratched across a run in the first frame, with a two-out RBI single. Duke starter Aidan Weaver finished the first inning with two strikeouts, while Matthew Strand also tallied an out, throwing out an attempted steal of second base.
- Weaver punched out the side in the second inning, needing only 13 pitches to retire the Cavaliers in order. Weaver and his defense worked around a leadoff walk in the third inning, as he struck out the next batter before Strand nabbed another attempted steal of second. Tyler Albright and Collin Anderson combined for a relay from deep in the left field corner, as Anderson's throw to the plate was just in time for Strand to apply the tag and end the inning at home.
- Strand put Duke in the lead, 2-1 in the top of the fourth. After Hamilton once again doubled and stole third, Strand laced an RBI triple to the alley in right center.
- Weaver continued to mow down Virginia hitters, striking out three consecutive across the fourth and fifth frames.
- A pair of RBI singles, followed by an RBI triple, pushed the Cavaliers in front, 5-2, in the bottom of the sixth.
- Virginia added an insurance run in the eighth, which proved crucial as Albright blasted a 425-foot, two-run, homer in the top of the ninth to pull Duke within two, 6-4. The Blue Devils rally fell short however, as the Cavaliers went on to record the final two outs of the game across the next two batters.
