GREENSBORO, N.C. - Blue Devil senior Marybeth Kreger registered a goal in the 77th minute on Saturday evening to lift the Duke women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory in exhibition action over UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
Duke kicked off the match with the first two shots of the game by freshman Laura Weinberg and redshirt sophomore Ashley Rape. As a team, the Blue Devils held a 7-4 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes with both teams not able to hit the back of the net.
In the second half, Duke once again stayed on the attack with an 8-3 shot advantage. The Blue Devils were able to get on the board at the 77:54 mark as Kreger nailed a goal from 18 yards away. During the 15 minute overtime, Duke outshot UNCG, 4-1.
Duke held a 19-8 lead in shots for the match to go along with a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Mollie Pathman led the Blue Devils with four shots, while senior Carey Goodman added three. Redshirt freshman Callie Simpkins, senior Rebecca Allen and Kreger attempted two shots each. Only three Spartans attempted shots on the night.
A total of 24 Blue Devils saw action in the contest. In goal for Duke, sophomore Tara Campbell started and played the first half. A product of Cincinnati, Ohio, Campbell notched four saves in 45 minutes. Junior Emily Nahas and freshman Meghan Thomas closed the contest in goal playing 31 and 29 minutes, respectively. Each reserve goalkeeper registered one save.
In the starting lineup, Duke featured eight freshmen and sophomores. Prior to the start of the game, the coaches decided to play an extra 15 minutes of overtime no matter what the score was.
Duke will open the 2010 campaign on Friday, Aug. 20 at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
