DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Nadine Fahoum grabbed her 100th career win with a 6-1, 6-0 win to help propel the seventh-ranked Duke women's tennis team to a 7-0 sweep of ranked William & Mary.
“It was on the website that I had my 99th win and I totally forgot about this,” senior Nadine Fahoum said. “I am very excited and happy and hopefully I will have many more wins for the Blue Devils.”
The Duke tandem of Monica Gorny and Mary Clayton grabbed the first doubles win on the day as they defeated Nina Vulovich and Marlen Mesgarzadeh by a score of 8-2 and moved to 2-0 on the season. Senior teammates Reka Zsilinszka and Elizabeth Plotkin cruised to an 8-2 win over Marivick Mamiit and Katie Kargl to clinch the single point for the early 1-0 advantage. The No. 4 duo of Ellah Nze and Fahoum suffered an 8-6 loss at the hands of Anik Cepeda and Hope Johnson.
“I thought that we did a good job in singles transitioning to the some of things we didn't do well in doubles. We talked to them after the doubles about being more aggressive at the start of points, not letting balls drop and being more aggressive with first serves and stuff, so I thought they handled that really well and did good job with that,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “We are happy with the win and we are better than we were 10 days ago and we will be better next weekend than we were today. I think it was a good all around effort from everybody, especially in singles.”
The Blue Devils rolled in singles as they won all six matches in straight sets. Fahoum got off the court first for Duke, cruising past Vulovich 6-1, 6-0 and moved to 2-0 on the year at the No. 1 spot. Zsilinszka picked up win number two on the year at the No. 2 spot in a 6-0, 6-1, win over Hope Johnson, while Plotkin grabbed 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot against Mesgarzadeh to seal the victory for the Blue Devils.
Duke took the final three singles matches of the competition to pick up the sweep. Nze grabbed the fifth point for the Blue Devils at the No. 4 spot over Cepeda in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-1, and moved to 98 wins for her career.
Duke freshman Hanna Mar won her second dual match in her career from the No. 6 spot in straight sets over Mamiit 6-3, 6-0, while freshman teammate Rachel Kahan won her first career singles dual match in a Blue Devil uniform. Kahan grabbed the straight set win 6-2, 6-2 over Kargl to complete the sweep.
The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 on the year and William & Mary fell to 0-1. Duke will next host the 2011 ITA Kick-off Weekend at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Jan. 30-31. The women will take on Brown on Sunday and then either Tulsa or Texas A&M on Monday. All of the action will be available live on GoDuke.com.
