DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team competed at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships last week, while a couple Blue Devils also competed in the San Diego State University Fall Classic. Head coach Jamie Ashworth took some time to reflect on the week, and what the team will be working on before the ITA Regionals.
The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., served as the host to the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships last week, where freshman Beatrice Capra advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw. The newcomer defeated 2011 NCAA semifinalist and No. 7 Nicole Gibbs from Stanford, and 16th-ranked Danielle Lao from Southern California, before falling to the nation's No. 2 player Allie Will of reigning national champion, Florida. In reaching the quarterfinals, Capra earned an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
In San Diego, freshmen Annie Mulholland and Monica Turewicz finished their weekends at the SDSU Fall Classic after both Blue Devils recorded perfect 3-0 records in their respective singles flights. The newcomers also teamed up to reach the semifinals of their doubles flight.
This year's ITA Regionals will be held Oct. 20-24 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Matches will be played indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at the University of North Carolina.
