PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Duke women's tennis team completed the second and final day of prequalifying Sunday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
The Blue Devils' found great success in the doubles pre-qualifying matches as two couples worked their way into the qualifying rounds on Tuesday. Freshmen Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld began the day with an 8-1 victory over Nebraska's Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt in the second round, followed by an 8-4 triumph over Vanderbilt's Lauren Mira and Jackie Wu tandem.
After a first round bye in yesterday's first round action, junior Mary Clayton and sophomore Hanna Mar opened the day with an 8-3 win against Memphis' Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska. The pair then earned a place in the qualifying rounds after outlasting Southern California's Gabriella DeSimone and Zoe Scandalis by an 8-6 count.
Despite winning the first set decisively, Mar fell to Maria Fucillo from ACC-rival Virginia 6-1, 4-6, 3-6 in a match where the winner clinched a berth into the qualifying rounds. Mar was the only Blue Devil remaining in the singles pre-qualifying rounds.
After a day off Monday, qualifying rounds for singles and doubles will begin on Tuesday. Sophomore Rachel Kahan will face off with Northwestern's Kate Turvy, while Clayton will meet St. Marys' Catherine Isip in the opening round of singles.
In the doubles draw, senior Monica Gorny and Kahan will take on a California Golden Bears duo of Taylor Davis and Annie Goransson in the first round. Capra and Goldfeld will square off against Texas Tech's Samantha Adams and Nikki Sanders, while Clayton and Mar will meet yet another duo from Southern California in Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria.
