CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team swept the competition on the first day of the 2011 ITA Women's Carolinas' Regional. The Blue Devils competed in the opening round of the singles and doubles main draws.
In singles action, senior Monica Gorny defeated Appalachian State's Jennifer Ansari 6-1, 6-2, while junior Mary Clayton and sophomore Hanna Mar both won 6-2, 6-2 over their opponents from UNC Wilmington. Clayton defeated Alyssa Ritchie and Mar upended Angie Sekely of the Seahawks.
Duke's freshmen also had productive days as Annie Mulholland dismantled Charleston's Caroline Newman 6-4, 6-2, and Monica Turewicz outlasted Elon's Jordan Johnston, 6-2, 6-1. Ester Goldfeld completed the Blue Devils' sweep on their first day at regionals, defeating UNC Wilmington's Olga Blank, 6-3, 6-2.
After all three pairs received first round byes, each doubles tandem swept their competition and advanced to the round of 16. Freshman Beatrice Capra and Mulholland, seeded third in the draw, teamed up to take down Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu and Camille Amrani by an 8-6 margin. Clayton and Mulholland also defeated a pair from Winthrop, Giovanna Portioli and Sandra Herrera, 8-3. Mar and Turewicz had no trouble with their matchup, as they shut out Coastal Carolina's Dominique de Wit and Amanda Malatek, 8-0.
On Saturday, the Blue Devils will return to action at the Cone-Kenfield Center as the second and third rounds get underway in the singles main draw. Turewicz and Gorny will take to the courts against two South Carolina opponents. Turewicz will face Katerina Popova, while Gorny will meet fourth seeded Jaklin Alawi. Mulholland will meet Winthrop's Andressa Garcia and Clayton will battle Charleston's Christin Newman, while Mar will square off with Clemson's Monica Kochanova. Goldfeld will close out round of 32 action for Duke when she takes on Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema.
In doubles, all three combinations will take on ACC opponents with hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals. Capra and Goldfeld will meet Wake Forest's Ryann Cutillo and Karen Forman, Clayton and Mulholland will face Clemson's Nelly Ciolkowski and Monica Kochanova, and Mar and Turewicz will square off against North Carolina's Tessa Lyons and Caroline Price.
