CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Blue Devils finished up their second day at the 2011 ITA Carolina Regionals with some huge wins over top-ranked opponents. Three players advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinals in the singles main draw, while two of Duke's three doubles units also made it through.
Sophomore Hanna Mar and freshman Monica Turewicz were Saturday's standout performers for the Blue Devils in the singles main draw. Mar advanced to the round of 16 with a 5-1 lead in the first set before Clemson's Monika Kochanova withdrew due to injury. Mar, ranked No. 104 in the nation, then scored a huge upset in the round of 16 when she took down No. 6 Zoe De Bruycker of North Carolina, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Turewicz defeated South Carolina's Katerina Popova, ranked 96th in the nation, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, before scoring anupset over No. 8 Josipa Bek of Clemson, 6-1, 7-6(6). Turewicz is now undefeated this fall with a 6-0 record and has not lost one set during that span.
Junior Mary Clayton also had a successful day in the singles main draw, picking up a 6-3, 6-1 second round win over Charleston's Christin Newman before downing Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan in a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision in the round of 16.
Freshman Annie Mulholland picked up a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Winthrop's Andressa Garcia in the second round, but lost to N.C. State's Joelle Kissell in the round of 16, 6-0, 6-3.
Senior Monica Gorny and freshman Ester Goldfeld could not escape the second round of the main draw, as Gorny fell to South Carolina's Jaklin Alawi 6-2, 6-4, while Goldfeld lost a three-set battle to Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
In doubles action, the freshman tandem of Beatrice Capra and Goldfeld, seeded third in the draw, continued to roll as they dismantled Wake Forest's Ryann Cutillo and Karen Forman by an 8-2 count. Mar and Turewicz then teamed up and defeated ACC-rival North Carolina's Tessa Lyons and Caroline Price, 8-3.
Fifth-seeded Clayton and Mulholland were not as fortunate after they were taken down by Clemson's Monika Kochanova and Nelly Ciolkowski by a 9-7 margin.
Quarterfinal play will begin tomorrow with doubles matches starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by singles main draw action at 10:30 a.m. All matches will be played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
