CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – On the final day of the 2011 ITA Carolina Regional Championships, freshmen Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld won their semifinal doubles match in comeback fashion, before falling in the finals to the No. 1 doubles tandem in the nation.
Capra and Goldfeld began the day against Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert. Duncan and Talbert, seeded second in the draw and ranked No. 7 in the nation, defeated Duke's Hanna Mar and Monica Turewicz 8-3 in the quarterfinals on Sunday to advance to Monday's semifinal match.
The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons went back and forth to open the match as Wake Forest took a 3-2 lead. Duncan and Talbert pulled ahead 6-2 before Capra and Goldfeld made a strong comeback to trail just 6-5. Down 7-6 and facing match point, the freshman duo came back to win the set and the match 9-7.
In the finals, Capra and Goldfeld were pitted against Clemson's Keri Wong and Josipa Bek – the nation's top-ranked doubles tandem. Capra and Goldfeld jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Clemson fought back and took a 4-2 lead. After the Blue Devils tied the match at four apiece, the Tigers jumped ahead one last time, 7-4, before eventually winning the match 8-5.
The team will conclude its fall season Nov. 3-6 when several players compete at the ITA Indoor National Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Those not competing in the ITA event will remain in Durham for the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
