Duke Head Coach Robbie Church
On the importance of having the players rested…
“Congratulations to Radford for being able to win their conference. Their staff does a fantastic job. We had more talent than they did, but I thought we played well today. That was the thing that we really kind of beat into their heads this week. In the past few weeks we concentrated too much on the opponents we played, so we really went back and looked at ourselves and looked at our shape and looked at how we attacked and how we defended all week. It was a long time since we played Wake Forest so we were hungry to get back out here. I was very happy with how we played. I thought we went deep into our bench and everyone who came off the bench played great.”
On assessing the offense and improving on issues with ball movement against Wake Forest…
“It's two different teams. Wake caused us some problems, but I just didn't think our shape and our speed of play were very good. We kind of went back to the “Three S's.” We talked about shape, speed of play and support. I think, offensively, we did all three of those things really, really well here. I'm very happy with today – very honored and it's a privilege to be playing with only 32 teams left, but we do know that things are going to go up, and go up very quickly [against] the University of Georgia. We've played Georgia a number of times in the NCAA Tournament and during regular season. They're a great program. It's going to be a real, real challenge on Friday night, here.
On the team's defensive play…
“When we lost the ball, what are we doing afterwards? I thought we chased the ball down really well. We pressured them so that they couldn't get a rhythm of play, and they couldn't play balls into their players. It made the job real easy on our backs and our goalkeepers. I thought [we had] really good energy from our forwards [and] really good energy from our midfielders today. Set-plays; I thought we started a little slow on those. We served a couple behind the goal, but after that, we played them in dangerous positions of the field. I thought our kids used their legs pretty well and tried to attack their backs.”
Duke Sophomore Midfielder Kaitlyn Kerr
On having 9 days off to rest prior to the NCAA Tournament…
“That was really important. At this stage your legs are tired, but you have to look past that because the most important part of the season is yet to come.”
On the aggressive approach…
“We've been preparing for this game for over a week now. We just wanted to take it to them as soon as we could. We weren't doing much competitive stuff in practice so that we could save it for today because we really wanted to come out hard in the beginning.”
On her first goal…
“I noticed that they were bunkering-in a lot so at my position, I'm a high center-mid, so I have to get forward earlier and quicker when they're bunkering-in. I made a diagonal run, Erin [Koballa] found me, it was a great ball, and I just tried to get behind the defense. I just tried to shoot, I honestly didn't know where it was going, but good thing it went in.”
On her physical condition…
“I'm healing injuries constantly. I'm not completely healthy right now – they wanted to rest me, but I wanted to get in a little bit if I could.”
Duke Senior Forward Chelsea Canepa
On how it felt to score after assisting on two other goals…
“It was a really good feeling. When you work hard for so long, it's nice when you get your own chance when you put it on goal.”
On Kaitlyn Kerr and her first goal…
“She is an amazing player and she's always the type to score goals in any type of situation, so I wasn't surprised to see her score that goal. She's very aggressive off the ball and she takes shots even if they're not likely to go in.”
On the team's focus…
“We were very focused. Our preparation was very rigorous. We were anxious to play all week long. It's hard to practice five days and not step on the field and be competitive, so we were really anxious to get out here and put forward our best play and not overlook any opponent.”
On assisting freshman Katie Trees' first collegiate goal…
“I'm excited for her that she was able to score in a game like this, in the NCAA. She is definitely going to be a player to watch out for in the future. She's going to be on the end of a lot of goals, I think, and this is just one of many to come. It was good for her to get that goal now and that will build confidence for later games.”
Radford Head Coach Ben Sohrabi
“Duke is a well-coached team and if you make a mistake against them, they're going to punish you. The one thing we can take away from this is how hard you play. Every day and every game this season they stepped up and played hard and today was no different. I'm proud to be their coach.”
