FLUSHING, N.Y./DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team competed in two separate tournaments Friday, as freshmen Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld were at the ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and five other Blue Devils began play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
In New York, Goldfeld and Capra began the day with a quarterfinal doubles match in the main draw again fifth-ranked and third-seeded Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews from Notre Dame. The match was never out of reach on either side, as Duke led three games to two, before the Irish fought back to take a 5-4 lead. Duke's freshman duo could not counter back, as Notre Dame went on to win 8-5 and advanced to the semifinals.
Capra, who lost a three set, opening round match yesterday to Texas' 14th-ranked Aeriel Ellis, fell into the singles consolation bracket where she met Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota – the nation's 29th-ranked player. The Ellicott City, Md. native had no problem defeating Pluskota, 6-1, 6-1, advancing to tomorrow's quarterfinals of the consolation draw, where she will meet Tulsa's Samantha Vickers.
The Blue Devils became the beneficiaries of a rain-altered schedule on the first day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational, as their day one matches were moved indoors to the Sheffield Tennis Center. Matches were originally scheduled to be played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at the University of North Carolina.
Duke started the day with two doubles matches against fellow ACC member N.C. State, where senior Monica Gorny and junior Mary Clayton defeated Tatiana Illova and Elisha Hande, 8-2. Sophomore Hanna Mar and newcomer Annie Mulholland won 8-5 over Sophie Nelson and Christy Sipes.
Duke's doubles tandems also played two doubles matches against Princeton. Mar and Mulholland downed Joan Cannon and Monica Chow 8-6, but Clayton and Gorny fell to 8-4 to Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff.
ACC rival Virginia was Duke's lone singles opponent for the day, as the two sides played five matches to close out the day. Freshman Monica Turewicz defeated Erin Vierra 6-3, 6-2 and Gorny upended Maria Fucillo 6-4, 7-6(4) to post victories for the Blue Devils. Virginia was able to take the other three matches, however, as Lindsey Hardenbergh downed Mar 6-1, 6-2, while Li Xi defeated Clayton 6-1, 6-3. Mulholland was outlasted by Caryssa Peretz 7-5, 6-2.
Day two action resumes in Chapel Hill tomorrow, as Duke will begin the day with doubles matches against Marshall at 10 a.m. The Blue Devils will face North Carolina in singles at 11:15 a.m., followed by Furman at 3:30 p.m. All matches are scheduled to be played indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
