FLUSHING, N.Y./CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a battle of the nation's top two freshmen, Duke's Beatrice Capra defeated UCLA's Robin Anderson, the nation's No. 2 newcomer, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(6) to win the singles consolation championship Sunday at the 2011 ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
After coming off two decisive victories over ranked opponents the day before, Capra started Sunday morning a little slow, losing the first set to Anderson, 6-1. With the second set tied 4-4, Capra surged to a 7-5 victory, and forced a third set.
The third set started evenly, as Capra and Anderson split the first two games. Anderson took the next two games to grab a 3-1 lead, but Capra fought back to tie the set at three. After ties at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6, Capra broke through to win the final set, 7-6(6), to claim the victory.
