Story #10: Men's & Women's Lacrosse Advance To Final Four
In March, both of Duke's lacrosse teams won NCAA Quarterfinal games in upset fashion just one day apart to advance to the Final Four.
On March 21, the fifth-seeded Duke women downed fourth-seeded Florida, 13-9, in Gainesville behind three goals apiece from Sarah Bullard and Kat Thomas to reach the national semifinals for the sixth time in program history. One day later in Foxborough, Mass., the fifth-seeded men's squad upended fourth-seeded Notre Dame, 7-5, thanks in part to Dan Wigrizer's 14 saves to punch its ticket to the national semifinals for the fifth consecutive season.
The Blue Devil women's team fell to Maryland in the NCAA semifinals and finished the season with a 15-5 overall record. Both Emma Hmm (team-high 51 goals) and Christie Kaestner (team-high 80 total points) earned first team All-America honors while Thomas and Kim Wenger were second team choices.
The Duke men's unit also was eliminated by Maryland in the semifinals on Memorial Day weekend, and closed the year at 14-6. Second team pick Justin Turri headlined six total All-America selections for the Blue Devils.
