DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University freshman Beatrice Capra will head to Rouen, France and represent the United States at the sixth annual Master'U BNP Paribas tournament. The event is an international collegiate team competition featuring eight teams consisting of college and university players from around the world.
"It's an amazing opportunity to compete against players from all over the world," said Capra. "It's a team event and I'm still getting used to the whole team format, so hopefully that will help me too. "
Joining Capra on the U.S. team is Lauren Embree from the University of Florida and Arizona State's Jacqueline Cako. Despite playing at different schools in the U.S., Capra is very familiar with Embree.
"I love Lauren," Capra commented. "I've known her since I was 13 [years old] and we've always been so close. I actually really looked up to her when I was younger and we used to travel together all the time. I know that even though we're at different schools, we'll always support each other."
Capra is also no stranger to Cako, and is more than pleased to team up with the Sun Devil.
"I've known her for a long time and she's such a good competitor," stated Capra. "She's a really good person."
In 2009, the U.S. defeated France to win the title, but lost to the French in the 2010 title match. This year marks the fourth straight year the U.S. will be competing in the event, which also includes teams from Belgium, China, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Spain.
"I'm excited to play more matches," mentioned Capra. "I'm really excited to go to Paris. I haven't been there since the French Open two years ago."
This past fall, the newcomer complied a 6-2 overall singles record, along with a 10-3 doubles record. Ranked the No. 1 freshman by the ITA, Capra defeated the 7th, 16th, 24th, 29th and 89th ranked players, as well as the No. 2-ranked freshman.
The tournament begins Thursday, Dec. 8, and concludes Sunday, Dec. 11.
