In the blue bracket for singles play, sophomore Hanna Mar defeated Alabama's Taylor Lindsey 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals where she will take on Texas' Aeriel Ellis. Senior Monica Gorny fell into the consolation bracket following a loss to Illinois' Rachael White 6-1, 6-3. Gorny will face North Carolina's Haley Hemm in a consolation quarterfinal.
In the black bracket, two freshmen Blue Devils won impressive decisions. Annie Mulholland defeated Texas A&M's Sun Wen 6-4, 6-4, while Ester Goldfeld knocked off UNC's Jennifer Stone, 6-1, 6-1. Mulholland will next face Illinois' Melissa Kopinski and Goldfeld will meet Purdue's Mara Schmidt in quarterfinals on Saturday.
In the white bracket, junior Mary Clayton defeated Texas' Krista Damico 6-3, 6-3, while sophomore Rachel Kahan downed Purdue's Jennifer Rabot 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Clayton will go up against William & Mary's Jeltje Loomans and Kahan will face Alabama's Courtney McLane.
In doubles play, the Blue Devils saw all three pairs advance to the finals or consolation finals of their bracket. In the A bracket, the duo of Kahan and Mulholland lost an 8-6 decision to William & Mary's Belaya and Loomans, but rebounded to defeat Illinois' White and Allin, 8-4. On Saturday, Kahan and Mulholland will battle Santacroce and Bentley from Texas and Texas A&M in the A bracket's consolation championship.
In the B bracket, Clayton and Goldfeld teamed up to defeat the UNC duo of Stone and Slater in the first round before defeating the Miami's Dubins and Bolivar pair 8-5. The victory puts Clayton and Goldfeld in the B bracket championship match against Mississippi's Boxx and Guthrie.
In the C bracket, the tandem of Gorny and Mar dropped an opening round match to Purdue's Rabot and Schmidt, but rebounded after defeating Mississippi's Jones and Rohde Moe, 8-0, in the consolation semifinals. Gorny and Mar will go up against ACC-rival De Bruyecker and McHale from North Carolina in the consolation championship on Saturday.
All third place and championship matches in doubles play will begin Saturday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park. Quarterfinal and semifinal singles matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. starts, respectively.
