DURHAM, N.C.-Southern Methodist University senior Arthur Ivo netted a goal 3:33 into the first overtime to lift 17th-ranked SMU to a 1-0 overtime victory over Duke in the final contest of the annual Duke/Nike Soccer Classic. The Blue Devils held a 22-16 advantage in shots in the loss.
Duke freshman midfielder Andrew Morales and junior forward Andrew Wenger both were named to the All-Tournament Team. UC Santa Barbara took home the tournament title with a 2-0-0 record on the weekend.
"We were creating some really good opportunities," head coach John Kerr said. "There was some really great movement and I was really pleased with the performance overall. We worked hard defensively. We had to overcome some injuries and move people around and I thought everyone stepped up. It's just unfortunate that at a crucial time both Friday night and today we got punished for lack of concentration."
The Mustangs created the early chances in the first half before Duke started to control the run of play. Daniel Tweed-Kent was the first to break through for the Blue Devils as he fired a shot on frame. Just five minutes later Christopher Tweed-Kent forced SMU goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra to make a stop.
The Blue Devils continued to attack and Wenger found a streaking Joe Pak running on the right side. Pak collected the ball, but sailed his shot over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless midway through the opening period.
Perhaps the best chance of the afternoon came in the 27th minute when freshman Nick Palodichuk headed a Morales corner kick to the far post. An SMU defender was there on the post and able to clear it off the line as the ball was sailing past the fingertips of Ibarra.
Duke managed six more shots, including a shot from Wenger that bounced off the post, in the final 20 minutes, but could not get on the scoreboard. The Blue Devils held a 10-6 advantage in shots for the first session and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Duke continued to press forward in the second half. Junior midfielder Ryan Brown got forward on the left side just over a minute into the period and ripped a shot to the far post. Ibarra made the diving save to keep the Blue Devils off the board. Holding the majority of the possession, Duke kept Ibarra and the SMU defense busy throughout the half.
Despite the 11-9 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, Duke could not find the back of the net. The Blue Devils had the final chances of regulation with a corner kick in the final minute and a shot from Wenger in the waning seconds.
Wenger got the first shot in overtime, just missing wide only 19 seconds into the period. And just three minutes later Juan Castillo got the ball on the left side of the penalty area and was able to find an opening across the face of the goal. Ivo got the ball on his right foot and finished the shot from 12 yards out for the 1-0 win.
Duke junior goalkeeper James Belshaw finished with six saves, while Ibarra had nine stops.
The Blue Devils open ACC play on Sept. 9, hosting Virginia on Fox Soccer Channel. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. and will be televised live by FSC.
