Swart Strikes Out 10 in 4-1 Win Over GWU

DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman lefty Trent Swart struck out a career-high 10 batters and held George Washington to only three hits in six shutout innings as Duke topped the Colonials 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.
A night after junior Marcus Stroman struck out a career-high 17 batters, Swart (2-1) picked up where he left off, keeping the Colonial hitters off balance throughout his six innings. Swart had a strikeout in every inning and issued a season-low one walk in just his third collegiate start. Swart also struck out the side in the third inning. He tied his previous career high of eight strikeouts, set last week against Canisius, by the fourth inning.
Swart lowered his ERA to 2.87 and now has 20 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.
Freshman reliever Andrew Istler needed only 24 pitches to pick up his first career save after limiting the Colonials to one run on one hit in three innings out of the bullpen. Istler threw six pitches in a 1-2-3 seventh inning and seven pitches in a 1-2-3 eighth.
Duke (7-5) scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Andy Perez drew a one-out walk to get the inning going. Two batters later, catcher Ryan Munger lined the first pitch he saw into center field. Shortstop Matt Berezo then drew a two-out walk on four pitches to load the bases. Right fielder Grant McCabe sent the first pitch he saw through the left side for a two-run single. Center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms followed with an RBI-single to right, scoring Berezo. Designated hitter Jeff Kremer then lined an RBI-single to center to score McCabe.
George Washington (1-7) scored its lone run of the game in the top of the ninth on a RBI-groundout by pinch hitter Ollie Mittag.
Piwnica-Worms went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Blue Devils at the plate. McCabe drove in a pair of runs and scored once, while Kremer had a hit and an RBI. Berezo, Perez and Munger added one hit and one run scored apiece.
George Washington reliever Colin Milon (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing all four runs on two hits in 0.2 innings pitched.
Sunday's series finale will be at 1 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Fans will get free admission to Sunday's game. Fans attending the game should note that the concession stands at the DBAP will be closed on Sunday.
