DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team makes the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., today, to begin competition at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. The five-day tournament, running from Thursday, Oct. 16, through Monday, Oct. 20, begins with the qualifying singles draw Thursday morning and the doubles main draw Thursday afternoon. The matches are scheduled to occur at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Duke sends a contingent of six competitors to Chapel Hill, including redshirt senior Rachel Kahan, seniors Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland, sophomore Alyssa Smith, and freshmen Christina Makarova and Rebecca Smaller.
Duke opens the tournament with doubles action on Thursday, as the tandem of Makarova and Mulholland takes the court as a doubles pair for the first time this season. Thursday's doubles contest also marks Makarova's collegiate debut. The Duke doubles team is scheduled to face N.C. State's Natalia Janowicz and Joanna Nalborska at 4 p.m.
In addition to Makarova and Mulholland, the duo of Kahan and Smaller also begins doubles play Thursday at 4 p.m., facing UNC-Greensboro's Masey Demoss and Amy Ellis. Smaller and Kahan currently own a four-match win streak after posting a perfect 4-0 record at the Princeton Invitational earlier in the season.
Goldfeld and Smith begin doubles competition Thursday at 5 p.m., in a round of 32 matchup between either Davidson's duo of Jenna Brunner and Laina Cummer or Winthrop's pair of Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac. The Duke doubles team earned a bye in the first round of the doubles draw.
All of Duke's singles competitors are set to compete in the singles main draw, which begins Friday morning.
