PRINCETON, N.J. – The momentum from the first day of the Princeton Invitational carried over into day two, as the Duke women's tennis team posted a combined 2-0 doubles record and a 3-1 singles mark at the Lenz Tennis Center in Princeton, N.J.
Duke set the tone early, as the doubles team of freshmen Samantha Harris and senior Annie Mulholland followed an 8-1 victory yesterday with an 8-3 win over Columbia's Kanika Vaidya and Alexandra Solovyev. The win moved the pair to 2-0 on the year.
The doubles pair of redshirt senior Rachel Kahan and freshman Rebecca Smaller found themselves in a much tighter match, but ultimately earned the victory, 8-7 (4), over Columbia's Rima Asatrian and Adi Milsten. Duke's doubles pairs head into Sunday with a perfect 4-0 record in Princeton over the weekend.
In singles, Harris continued her stellar fall campaign and extended her winning streak to four matches this season following a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Penn's Sonya Latycheva. With the win, Harris improved to 6-1 on the season.
In addition to Harris, Kahan and Smaller also earned wins against their respective opponents, moving both to 3-4 this season in singles play. Kahan outlasted Penn's Alexandra Ion, 6-3, 6-4, while Smaller won a hard-fought contest over Lina Qostal of Penn, 6-3, 7-5.
In Duke's final singles match of the day, Mulholland put in a valiant effort against Penn's Kana Daniel, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6). Mulholland entered Saturday's match with a perfect 2-0 singles record this fall.
The Blue Devils open the final day of competition at 9 a.m. tomorrow with a doubles match against Princeton.
