PRINCETON,N.J. – The Duke women's tennis team concluded play at the Princeton Invitational on a high note, posting a perfect 4-0 combined singles record on the final day of competition in Princeton, N.J. The Blue Devils also recorded a near-perfect mark of 3-1 in doubles play Sunday morning.
The Duke duo of redshirt senior Rachel Kahan and freshman Rebecca Smaller remained undefeated on the season after earning two wins Sunday. The team of Kahan and Smaller started the day with a victory over Princeton's Katrine Steffensen and Emily Hahn, 8-3, before outlasting Penn's tandem of Alexandra Ion and Lina Qostal in a lengthy match, 8-7 (13).
The doubles team of senior Annie Mulholland and freshman Samantha Harris split its two matches Sunday, dropping the first match of the day, 8-3, against Princeton's Amanda Muliawan and Dorothy Tang. The Duke tandem rebounded nicely, however, ending competition on a positive note with an 8-4 defeat of Penn's Sonya Latycheva and Luba Vazhenina.
In singles, Harris's success continued, as she earned her fourth singles win of the weekend with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of South Carolina's Katie Fosnacht. The Melbourne, Australia, native improved to 7-1 this fall, while extending her win streak to five matches.
In addition to Harris, Kahan and Smaller also extended their respective win streaks to three matches. Kahan's fourth singles win of the season came in the way of a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alex Martin of South Carolina, while Smaller defeated Columbia's Vivian Chang, 6-3, 6-3.
Mulholland also won convincingly Sunday afternoon, upending Alison Mills of South Carolina, 6-1, 6-2. Mulholland, seeing competition for the first time this season, ended the weekend with a 3-1 record.
Duke returns to competition Oct. 16 with the start of the ITA Regionals.
