DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University senior midfielder Sean Davis has been voted by the ACC men's soccer coaches as the ACC's Midfielder of the Year after having his finest season as a Blue Devil. Davis' major award headlines Duke's five selections to the 2014 All-ACC teams.
Davis also represents Duke on the All-ACC first team, while junior Zach Mathers and sophomore Brody Huitema garner third team honors. Freshmen Markus and Cameron Moseley were voted to the ACC All-Freshmen Team. The Blue Devils are one of two teams with two freshmen represented on the All-Freshmen team, while Huitema is one of just four sophomores to capture All-ACC honors.
The ACC Midfielder of the Year honor to Davis marks the sixth year Duke head coach John Kerr has mentored a major award winner. Under Kerr, the Blue Devils have two offensive players of the year, two defensive players of the year, a freshman of the year and now midfielder of the year.
Duke's playmaker, Davis currently leads all ACC players and ranks fifth nationally with a career-high 10 assists. The 10 assists are three more than he totaled in his previous three seasons combined. Davis, with 12 points on the year to rank second on the team, recently was tabbed the nation's No. 5 player by Top Drawer Soccer.
He tallied a career-high three assists in Duke's 8-2 win over Stetson and provided assists in seven games overall for the Blue Devils. A three-time All-ACC honoree, the Holmdel, N.J., native was picked as the ACC Player of the Week after leading Duke to 2-1 win over then-No. 1 North Carolina with the equalizing goal and game-winning assist. For his career, Davis has started 62 of 64 games and scored seven goals and 17 assists for 31 points.
Mathers, a stalwart center back for Duke for much of the season, earns his second consecutive third team accolade after capturing the honor his sophomore season. Also a mainstay in the Duke midfield at times, the Texas native registered a pair of goals and an assist in his 1,366 minutes on the year. Mathers started 16 games on the year before missing the final three to injury. In his three seasons with the Blue Devils, Mathers has started all 51 of his games, scoring six goals and nine assists for 21 points.
Duke's top scorer in each of the past two seasons, Huitema captured his second All-ACC third team award. The Vancouver native led all Blue Devils in 2014 with five goals and five assists for 15 points. Huitema came on strong down the stretch for Duke with four goals and an assist in the final five games of the regular season. In his brief two-year career, Huitema has played in 37 games and scored 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points.
Playing on opposite ends of the field, Moseley and Fjørtoft had outstanding rookie campaigns for the Blue Devils. Helping to anchor a young backline, Fjørtoft started all 19 games and led all Blue Devils in minutes played with 1,655. The Norwegian product registered his first career point with an assist against Davidson. Three games later, Fjørtoft put his name on the scoreboard with his first Blue Devil goal.
An offense threat for the Blue Devils, Moseley started his career with a bang. He scored five goals in his first six games for Duke, including registering the game-winning score in the 2-1 victory over then-No. 1 North Carolina. Moseley twice scored two goals in a game, helping Duke to wins over Stetson and Temple. For the year, Moseley played in 17 games and scored five goals and an assist for 11 points.
Duke is 9-9-1 overall on the year and took seventh in the challenging ACC. The Blue Devils advanced to the ACC Tournament quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked Syracuse.
