DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Katy Colas to learn more about the Vienna, Virginia native.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite place to travel to with soccer?
Katy Colas: I've definitely loved going home to Virginia to go play just because I grew up going to some of those games and it's easy for my family and friends to come to.
GoDuke.com: What is a road trip memory you will always carry with you?
KC: Taking the sleeper bus back from FSU. It also was a really fun memory to look back on.
GoDuke.com: What is one lesson you have learned from playing soccer that you will use throughout the rest of your life?
KC: How to persevere. And believing if you keep doing the small things right eventually it will pay off.
GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest academic achievement at Duke?
KC: Maintaining above a 3.5 my four years here has been pretty proud for me.
GoDuke.com: Do you have a favorite class or professor at Duke?
KC: I really like taking business and ethics with Gary Hall. It's just looking at principles or egoism vs altruism and how you exemplify them in everyday life and how they would be exemplified in corporate life.
GoDuke.com: What do your teammates mean to you?
KC: Absolutely everything. They support me on and off the field in everything I do. If I'm having a bad day they are there for me. I've made the best memories of college with them and I know that every single day they will work their butt off for me and I have to do the same.
GoDuke.com: What is special about being a Duke soccer player?
KC: You really get the best of both worlds. You get to compete at high stakes and you also get to go to one of the best schools in the nation. What's unique is it's expected that you carry excellence in everything you do. You're expected to be at your best in both aspects of it. We're players that really do treat each other as a family and it's a very collegiate atmosphere.
GoDuke.com: What will you miss the most in soccer, on campus, and in Durham?
KC: I think I'll miss the competition the most from soccer, having a time of day where I can just go forget about everything else and compete against very talented people. I think I'll also miss seeing a group of 30 of my best friends every day. I'll miss the food places in Durham. They're definitely fun. I think at Duke a lot of times you take for granted how many interesting and talented people you're surrounded by every day so I'll miss that.
