DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's tennis team begins the 2014-15 season this weekend as the Blue Devils host the Duke Fab Four Invitational at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. The three-day tournament, scheduled to run from Friday, Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 14, includes student-athletes from ten teams across the country, including six squads ranked in the top 30 of the ITA's end-of-the-season rankings last year.
In addition to Duke, which concluded the 2013-14 season ranked second by the ITA, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 Virginia, No. 12 Miami, No. 21 Oklahoma State, No. 28 Ole Miss, No. 58 Furman and San Jose State are also sending representatives to compete in the contest.
The tournament provides an early-season showcase of the nation's top talent. A total of 17 singles players scheduled to participate in the invitational rank among the ITA's preseason top 125, with five competitors, including North Carolina's third-ranked Hayley Carter, Duke's 12th-ranked Ester Goldfeld, Florida's 14th-ranked Brianna Morgan, Miami's 18th-ranked Stephanie Wagner and Oklahoma State's 26th-ranked Viktoriya Lushkova boasting top-30 preseason rankings.
Similar to singles, numerous doubles pairs attending the tournament rank among the nation's top 60, according to the ITA. The top-ranked Alabama duo of Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen headline the doubles competition, while Miami's third-ranked pair of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno and the 27th-ranked team of Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente from Oklahoma State are also entered in the event.
Joining Goldfeld in representing Duke in singles action this weekend includes 109th-ranked Alyssa Smith, redshirt senior Rachel Kahan and freshmen Samantha Harris and Rebecca Smaller. In doubles, Duke fields two teams that compete together for the first time in each of the individual's respective careers, including the pairing of Goldfeld and Harris and the duo of Smith and Smaller. Kahan is also set for doubles play, teaming with Virginia's Marie Faure.
The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday morning with the first round of men's and women's doubles.
