DURHAM, N.C. – With a week off following the fall's season-opening Duke Fab Four, the Blue Devils' men's tennis team is back in action at the ITA Men's All-American Championships. The week-long event will take place in Tulsa, Okla., at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Duke will send redshirt senior Cale Hammond and junior Daniel McCall to the prequalifying rounds, which take place Sept. 27-28. The event will be a homecoming for Hammond, a Tulsa native who attended Bishop Kelley High School.
Hammond went 3-1 in singles action at the Duke Fab Four and McCall finished as the black draw consolation champion with a 2-1 record during the event.
Starting as qualifying singles for the Blue Devils will be junior Bruno Semenzato, senior Raphael Hemmeler, freshman Nicolas Alvarez and redshirt senior Chris Mengel. The four will begin Sept. 29 with action running through Oct. 1. Semenzato finished in second place in the white draw at the Duke Fab Four with a 3-1 mark. Hemmeler and Alvarez both posted 3-1 records during the Fab Four while Mengel was 1-1.
The Blue Devils' lone participant in the main draw is senior Jason Tahir. Action during the main draw runs from Oct. 2-6. Tahir could be joined by other Duke players if they advance out of the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds.
In doubles action, Tahir and Mengel will be joined by Hemmeler and Hammond in the qualifying doubles round. Like singles, both the doubles teams could advance to the main draw.
Following action at the ITA All-American, Duke will send players to both the Battle in the Bay Classic and the Wake Forest Fall Invitational from Oct. 10-12.
