BLACKSBURG, Va. – Second-ranked Virginia Tech totaled a goal in the first minute on its way to taking down the Duke women's soccer team, 2-0, at Thompson Field Sunday evening in Blacksburg, Va.
The loss snapped a three-match win streak for the Blue Devils, who dropped to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in ACC action, while Virginia Tech improved to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
“It was obviously a very hard fought, competitive game,” said Duke head coach
Robbie Church. “We competed hard and played well at times. We didn't finish our opportunities we had and we gave up a goal early, which we cannot do. We have to continue to try to put 90 minutes together. We are very close but we are not quite there with the top teams in the league. This week we have to just get back and work hard.”
Duke was called for a foul in the box in the first minute of the match and Virginia Tech's Katie Yensen drained her second goal of the season to put the Hokies ahead, 1-0, just 50 seconds into action. It marked only the third goal allowed by Duke in the first half this season and snapped a three-match scoreless streak for the Blue Devils.
Although Duke was down early, the Blue Devils came back and junior
Kara Wilson took their first shot of the match in the fifth minute that went wide. Virginia Tech would go on to keep possession for most of the first half and held a 7-3 shot advantage. Wilson, senior
Kelly Cobb and sophomore
Rebecca Quinn attempted Duke's shots in the first stanza.
Duke came out in the second half and put the pressure on Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils went on to outshoot the Hokies, 8-3, and had all four of their corner kicks in the second stanza. Duke registered three corner kicks in a span of two minutes, which included an excellent chance by sophomore
Christina Gibbons that went wide.
Virginia Tech added a late goal in the 84th minute as the Blue Devils were trying to even the match. Murielle Tiernan finished a one-on-one chance, after Kelsey Loupee sent a perfect pass to the ACC leading scorer.
For the match, Duke outshot Virginia Tech, 11-10. Gibbons led the Blue Devils with three shots, while Quinn and Cobb each had two attempts. The Blue Devils had two goals called back in the match for offside calls and had a total of nine offside calls on Duke in the contest.
In goal for the Blue Devils, redshirt junior
